An old Holt Curriculum is used.  This text provides the option for level A, level B, and level C practice, making it perfect to use for both lovers and haters of math.  It also makes it work to teach this as a multi level class working with all Middle Schoolers, some even repeating the class and working on the higher level the next year. 
A solid grasp on basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division recommended.
